Storm
I've been writing code ..well, atleast trying to write code for about 10 hours. All the while I had Devin Townsend's Accelerated Evolution playing in the background. I've heard the album a few times before but today it really kicked me! Hence the post. I'm a big fan of his other projects Ocean Machine and Strapping Young Lad. Its very difficult to pin this kind of music to a particular genre. It has elements of rock, prog, metal and techno music. If you are a Strapping Young Lad fan, then you'd be utterly surprised at how different Devin's other side projects are. Devin's voice is excellent throughout the album. In fact, sometimes I feel that this guy has the most powerful voice in the realm of rock and metal. The only other vocalists that I can thnk of, with such commanding voices are Chuck Schuldiner, Phil Anselmo, James Maynard Keenan and probably Eddie Vedder. If there was such a thing as "the most insane voice ever" award, it would go to Devin anyday. (I love giving these awards for some reason :) He sings beautifully along with the music and suddenly double bass kicks in and Devin goes berserk, after a few seconds everything is pleasant again! The music is almost surreal. This is not the kinda music that you'd want to sit down and analyze. This isn't even the kinda music that has cool guitar leads and drum work. Its really emotional music. You can hear it in Devin's voice and in the melodies. It might take a while to start liking the music. Needless to say, this music is not for everybody.

ok WOW.... u say PROBABLY eddie vedder... i havent heard the other vocalists....but they have to be fukall-ly god....
you can remove that PROBABLY actually. I was just a tad unsure when I was posting. OK golu, do you listen to Tool? Keenan is one of the most aggressive vox I've heard. There's no growling. So you can check em out. The band is sadly no more as Keenan found Jesus or some such crap. Chuck (R.I.P) was the vox for Death. his piercing screams are scary at times.. and Anselmo sang for Pantera. Just listen to WALK. he's got a really menacing voice
I have been obsessed with Jethro Tull since past month and I think Ian Anderson's vocals are pretty damn good, especially in 'Thick as A Brick'.
About being powerful, that I'm not sure of,but surely the modulation and variation and change in tone are all quite nice. And a rocker with such excellent flute play is always different :)
Since I haven't listened to anyone mentioned there but PJ as of now,I may be pardoned of missing the point. But that's obsession for you :D
Absolutely man .. Devin is GOD ... I've never heard someone modulate their voice so well. If u listen to his songs u'd realise that he is best wen he changes from the soft, clean vocals to the screeching vocals and then growls and then he's back again to the clean vocals. Devin Townsend is the god of vocals, atleast for me. keenan is absolutely amazing too. Eulogy still stands to be one of my fav prog metal song. Chuck , being the pioneer in vokills , has always and will always be the best death metal vocalist for me. But Devin Townsend is right at the top ppl. U shud listen to ocean machine and especially strapping young lad. He has a very wide range. And on top of that he is helping small bands to record , in his studio. Probably in few year he's gonna be a producer, helping these small bands to spread their music. I read an interview some time back. Listen to SYL's Alien ... a mind boggling album . Its got the Dev and Hoglan. Wat more do u need :P(atleast I dont )
vikas, Devin already has a production company of his own. his label is called HevyDevy or something. has already produced a few bands including .. SOILWORK! awesome. if any of you is familiar with Steve Vai's Sex and Religion, Devin is the guy who sang on the album .he even toured with Vai at the age of 19!
He has his own productino but he is not yet considering himself as a complete producer. I'll search for that interview links. But watever bands he has produced , he gave them a very good sound in their albums.
Devy's the way to go , i dint know he sang for Vai ... thts awesome
